1. David Mock was born on 23 Dec 1772 in VA, died on 18 Aug 1842 in Page Co., VA at age 69, and was buried in Grove Cemetery, Page Co., VA.

David's marriage to Mary was obtained from the Fauquier Co., VA marriage records, which identifies Mary as a daughter of Frany Butler. The bondsman was Mathew Waddle. Possibly a sister of Mary, Nancy Butler, married William Roach in Fauquier Co., VA 5 Dec 1805. The marriage record identifies Nancy as a daughter of Fanny Butler. In the court records of Fauquier Co., VA in 1778 & 1779, Frances Butler, wife of a soldier in the Continental Army, twice received money from the court.

David appears in the personal property tax lists of Prince William Co., VA in 1796, 1797, 1798, 1800, and 1802. He appears yearly in the personal property tax lists for Shenandoah Co., VA from 1804 thru 1831. There is a second David Mauck in the county at the time, and David who married Mary Butler has the initials FB behind his name from 1804-1812. From 1813-1831, David is listed as a cooper. Page Co., VA was formed from Shenandoah Co. in December 1831, and David appears yearly in the personal property tax lists of Page Co. 1832 thru 31 Mar 1841.

David appears in the following Shenandoah Co. censuses: 1810 with 1 male 26-45, 2 males 10-16, 2 males 0-10, 1 female 26-45; 1820 in Pine Forge with 1 male 26-45, 1 male 10-16, 3 males 0-10, 1 female 26-45, 2 females 16-26, 2 females 10-16, and 1 female 0-10. In 1830 the two Davids in the Shenandoah Co. census are indicated as Sr. and Jr. David Mauck who married Sally Stroup died before the 1830 census, but had a son named David Jr. David Mock who married Mary Butler is not known to have a son named David. The David Sr. in 1830 Shenandoah Co. was most likely David Mock who married Mary Butler, and appears with 1 male 50-60, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 0-5, 1 female 50-60, 1 female 20-30, and 2 females 15-20.

David appears in the 1840 census of Page Co., VA with 1 male 60-70, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 60-70 and one female 20-30.

David is probably the David Mock who used personal property as collateral for a debt to the Almond brothers of Page Co. (who owned a local store) in Page Co., VA 11 Nov 1834 (@1). This personal property included cooper's tools. David's sons John, Morgan and Joseph are all listed as coopers in the 1850 census of Page Co., VA, in addition to David having been listed as a cooper in earlier tax lists and census. This indenture allowed David to use this personal property until such time that he fell behind in his payments, at which time William A. Harris would take custody of the collateral and pay the remaining debt. This deed was returned to the clerk's office of Page Co. 15 Nov 1834, however was not delivered to the Almonds until 10 Sep 1842, several weeks after David's death.

David and Mary are buried in the Grove Cemetery near Luray, Page Co., VA. Their headstones provided their birth and death dates. Buried in the same cemetery is Marcus Grove.

In the 1930's the Works Progress Administration completed an Historical Inventory for Page Co., VA. On page 45 the home of Marcus Grove is described as being 4 miles northwest of Luray on the south side of route 615, 1/2 mile west of Bixler's ferry. Marcus died in 1800 and the home was passed on to the Brumback family and their descendants. The historical overview of Marcus's home indicates that in the meadow in front of the house was a log cabin that was occupied by a family of Mocks. The cabin was washed away in the flood of 1870 and the Mocks then moved to a house on the mouth of Mill Creek. The WPA author indicates they believed the Mocks were renters. These were very likely descendants of David Mock and Mary Butler.

James Warren, descended from David and Mary thru their son John, his son William, his son Marcellus, his daughter Jean who married James Edward Warren, authored a one page letter that states David was born in Philadelphia and his father was Johann Philip Mauck, who arrived in Philadelphia from Rotterdam, Holland aboard the Phoenix on 20 Oct 1744. James provides nothing further on Johann Philip Mauck, but states that David moved to Prince William Co. in the 1790's, then to the area of Big Spring, Shenandoah Co. (now Page Co.) about 1807.

In December 1992 James Warren was contacted and asked for his sources for this information. He replied that genealogy was beyond him (possibly because of his age). His source for some of this info may have been an unsigned letter (undated) that states "from the notes by J.W. Mauck for Mary Brubaker in 1930". J.W. Mauck is not identified, but was likely Dr. Joseph William Mauck, a descendant of Daniel Mauck and Rebecca Baker (different Mauck line), who was a very thorough genealogist in the 1920's and 1930's, and President of Hillsdale College in MI. The letter states that a Mrs. Benjamin D. Edwards of Detroit, MI was born a Mauck, and had an outline of her genealogy made by her grandfather, F.M. Mauck (Francis Marion Mauck, son of John, son of David). This letter states that David's father (not named) came from Germany about 1750 and settled in Philadelaphia, occupation blacksmith. It states David was born in Philadelphia about 1775 and in the 1790's settled in Prince William Co., VA, then moved to Big Spring about 1807.

This information would appear to be second and third hand, although it quotes Mrs. Edwards and her grandfather as the source. Some of the information from Mrs. Edwards is corroberated by a letter I received from Helen Farrell of Fort Myers, FL in 1995, in that Helen is in possession of a photocopy of three small notebook papers that were given to her by her grandmother Mary Floy Mauck (daughter of Charles A. Mauck and Eva Rose). Helen believes her grandmother received them from Francis Marion Mauck. The notes on these papers provide dates on the births, marriages and deaths for John Mauck and Lydia Waite and their children, much of which is verified by official documentation elsewhere. Unfortunately the three papers have nothing more than dates and info on John Mauck and Lydia, however they would indicate that Francis Marion Mauck did maintain information on his genealogy.

James Warren's information is unverified and is provided only as a lead for further research. It should not be taken as fact (especially the info on David's father). Mrs. Edward's information appears to be more reliable, however, it should also be taken with a grain of salt until more of it can be verified with documentation. If in fact the information was provided by Francis Marion Mauck, as it would appear, the info is probably pretty accurate as Francis was writing about his father and grandfather, both of whom he definitely knew first hand.

Considering the following information, this author believes that David Mock is in some way related to Daniel Mauck who married first Barbara Harnsberger, then Rebecca Baker, and not from Philadelphia.

Documenting David and Mary's line has proven difficult due to the lack of records on this couple. Only one child can be verified through documentation, Morgan Mauck. There is no positive proof that the other children; John Mauck who married Lydia Waite, William Mauck who married Keziah Waite, Mary Mauck who married John Bixler, Ann Mauck, and Joseph Mauck who married Mary Ann Moyers, descend from David and Mary, however there is sufficient documentation to suspect that they do. Accepting that these are the children of David and Mary, consider the following.

David and Mary's daughter Mary B. Mauck married John Bixler 3 Sep 1833 in Page Co., VA. The bondsman was Henry Mauck. Henry Mauck was the son of David Mauck and Sally Stroup. There is some question here as to Mary being a daughter of David Mock and Mary Butler, as there is little proof. Mary Mauck-Bixler is buried in the same small family cemetery as David Mock and Mary Butler and as previously mentioned, her and her husband owned the property when David and Mary were buried there. Henry Mauck had a sister named Mary, but she married and moved to Ohio and can be accounted for.

John Bixler and Mary Mauck had a daughter named Ann who married William Judd 19 Jul 1855 in Page Co. William and Ann had a daughter named Rebecca Judd, who married James Isaac Mauck 26 Jan 1882 in Page Co. James was the son of John P. Mauck and Emily Ortz. John P. was the son of Henry Mauck and Margaret Aleshire. This is the same Henry that posted the bond for the marriage of Mary B. Mauck to John Bixler.

John Bixler had a sister named Lucy Bixler, both were the children of Michael Bixler. Lucy Bixler married Daniel Aleshire, who had a sister named Margaret Aleshire, who is the above Margaret Aleshire who married Henry Mauck. Daniel Aleshire and Margaret Aleshire were the children of John C. Aleshire, who, in the 1840 census of Page Co., lived with Henry Mauck.

John Mauck who married Lydia Waite is also believed to be a son of David Mock and Mary Butler, but, other than the above undated unsubstantiated note from "J.W. Mauck", no positive proof has been found. John and Lydia had a son named William A. Mauck. In a Page Co. deed dated 1 Jan 1847 William purchased land adjacent John Mauck and Abraham Mauck. This John could have been William's father, or it could have been John Mauck, son of Abraham Mauck Sr. and Mary Beaver, Abraham being the son of Daniel Mauck and his first wife, Barbara Harnsberger. Either way, the above Abraham Mauck in this deed was Abraham Mauck Jr., son of Abraham Mauck Sr. and Mary Beaver, and grandson of Daniel Mauck.

John Mauck and Lydia Waite had another son, Edward Calvin Mauck who married Virginia Buracker 25 Dec 1862 in Page Co. Virginia was the daughter of James Buracker and Mary Kite. Mary Kite had a brother named George L. Kite, both were the children of Jacob C. Kite. George L. Kite married Martha Koontz 15 Oct 1848 in Page Co. Martha Koontz was the daughter of Daniel Koontz and Elizabeth Mauck. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Mauck and Sally Stroup.

William Mauck who married Keziah Waite is also believed to be a son of David Mock and Mary Butler, but again no positive proof has been found. Keziah Waite is believed to be the sister of Lydia Waite who married William's probable brother John. William and Keziah had a son named William H. Mauck Jr. In a Page Co. deed dated 1 May 1848 William Mauck and John William Keyser purchased land from Andrew, Peter and Joseph Keyser. John William, Peter and Joseph Keyser were the children of Andrew Keyser and his wife Mary C. Brubaker. Mary C. Brubaker was the daughter of John Brubaker and Barbara Mauck. Barbara Mauck was the daughter of Daniel Mauck and Barbara Harnsberger. The Page Co. estate sale of John Brubaker, Barbara Mauck's husband, occurred in 1846. One of the buyers was the above William A. Mauck, son of John Mauck, son of David Mock and Mary Butler.

Further confusing this issue is Morgan Mauck. Morgan's marriage record identifies him as the son of David Mauck. His death record identifies him as the son of David and Mary Mock. Daniel Mauck and Rebecca Baker had a son named Robert Mauck, who on 29 May 1806 married Christina Ruffner. Robert and Christina and one child, Morgan Ruffner Mauck. Christina died shortly after Morgan's birth, and Robert remarried to her sister Esther Ruffner and moved to Ohio about 1826. Robert's bible records indicate Morgan was born 20 Oct 1806. The only other record of Morgan Ruffner Mauck is a Shenandoah Co. deed in 1828 where he sold land he had inherited from his uncle Isaac Ruffner. No record of Morgan is found in Ohio.

Examining the personal property tax lists of Page Co., which were taken yearly from 1832 to 1850, only one Morgan ever appears in them. In some of the lists he is adjacent the children of Abraham Mauck Sr., in others he is adjacent John Mauck and Lydia Waite. In the 1840 census he is adjacent the children of Abraham Mauck Sr. In the 1850 personal property tax list he is listed adjacent some of Abraham Mauck Sr.'s children, but in the census he is listed with his wife Rebecca Ann Phillips, which brings us back to the documentation that the Morgan who married Rebecca was the son of David Mock and Mary Butler.

Morgan Mauck appears as a buyer in the 1850 Page Co. estate sale of Asahel Slusher, husband of Mary Mauck, daughter of Abraham Mauck Sr. Joel Mauck, son of Abraham Mauck Sr., also appears as a buyer in Asahel's estate sale. In the 1850 census of Page Co. John Roudabush and Benjamin F. Smith lived together in the same home. On 16 Sep 1850 in Page Co. John Roudabush married Mary Mauck, daughter of Morgan Mauck. On 16 Jul 1852 in Page Co. Benjamin F. Smith married Susan Mauck, daughter of Joel Mauck, son of Abraham Mauck Sr.

It would not surprise this author if documentation is later found that David and Mary Mock raised Morgan Ruffner Mauck, son of Robert Mauck and Christina Ruffner. Please do not accept this as proof of anything other than confusion over what happened to Morgan Ruffner Mauck, but it is interesting that this one and only Morgan Mauck in Page Co. appears so frequently near the children of Abraham Mauck Sr., son of Daniel Mauck and Barbara Harnsberger.

The only thing for certain about the relationship of David Mock to Daniel Mauck is that some of their descendants shared the same gene pool, and lived in and around each other in a valley 10 miles wide and 20 miles long. Inevitably members of these two families would bump into each other in such a small valley for several generations. But given the totality of this information, this author believes it's more than a coincidence.

@1) Page Co., VA Deed Book #B p.211

David married Mary Ann Butler, daughter of Frany, on 28 Feb 1795 in Fauquier Co., VA. Mary was born on 9 Mar 1774 in VA, died on 30 Nov 1841 in Page Co., VA at age 67, and was buried in Grove Cemetery, Page Co., VA.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 2 M    i. John Mauck was born on 4 Nov 1797 in VA and died on 22 Aug 1868 in Greene Co., VA at age 70.

+ 3 M    ii. William H. Mauck was born in Jun 1800 in VA, died on 28 Mar 1867 in White Cloud, Doniphan Co., KS at age 66, and was buried in Olive Branch Cemetery, Doniphan Co., KS.

+ 4 M    iii. Morgan Mauck was born on 10 Jun 1807 in Shenandoah Co., VA, died on 1 Sep 1853 in Page Co., VA at age 46, and was buried in Whitehouse, Page Co., VA.

+ 5 F    iv. Ann Mauck was born in 1812-1820 in VA.

+ 6 F    v. Mary B. Mauck was born on 17 Oct 1815 in VA, died on 30 May 1853 at age 37, and was buried in Grove Cemetery, Page Co., VA.

+ 7 M    vi. Joseph Mauck was born about 1816 in VA and died before 1880.

2. John Mauck (David1) was born on 4 Nov 1797 in VA and died on 22 Aug 1868 in Greene Co., VA at age 70.

John appears yearly in the personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co., VA from 1820 thru 1831, and then in Page Co., which was formed from Shenandoah Co. in December 1831, in 1832 and then from 1835 thru 1850. He was not in the lists in 1833 and 1834.

John is in the 1830 census of Shenandoah Co. and 1840 census of Page Co., VA. John appears in the 1850 census of Page Co., VA with his wife and children. The census provided Lydia's birth data and John's occupation as a cooper. John and Lydia also appear in the 1860 census of Page Co., VA. In 1860 there is a Hannah Waite 39 yrs. b. VA living with them. Hannah's death is reported in The Page Courier 24 Aug 1882 as having occurred 19 Aug 1882 at the home of G.L. Kite near Marksville at the age of 62 years, 3 months, 2 days. The obituary states she died of dropsy and was a member of the Methodist Church. It does not name her relatives or surviving kin, stating only that she had no relatives living in Page Co. at the time of her death.

Of interest is Lydia and Hannah are probably related (possibly sisters) of Keziah Waite, who married John's younger brother William. Their parents have not been located, however, in the probate records of Madison Co., VA there is a Will dated 16 Apr 1801 and proved 24 Sep 1801 (@1) for John Wait. This Will identifies his wife as Keziah and children as Edward (dec'd), George (dec'd), Benjamin, John, Obediah, Jesse, Ann Blake Wait, Sarah Levell Wait, Phebe Cowgill Wait, and Elizabeth Stonesiever Wait. Keziah being an unusual name, John Mauck's wife Keziah may have been a granddaughter of the John and Keziah Wait in the 1801 will.

On 01 Jun 1822 John purchased 31 acres on Little Hawksbill Creek in Shenandoah Co., VA (@2). In another Shenandoah Co. deed 25 Dec 1824 (@3) a John Mauck purchased 86 3/4 acres near the headwaters of Hawksbill Creek adjacent John B. Sanford. This was probably John son of David, as the Jun 1822 property was purcased from John B. Sanford, as well as several of the following Page Co. deeds below. However, John Mauck son of Abraham Mauck also lived in this area and this second Shenandoah deed could have been him instead.

John and Lydia appear in the following deeds in Page Co., VA: on 08 Sep 1832 when he purchased 150 1/2 acres on Little Hawksbill Creek (mentions 31 acres previously purchased at same location) (@4); on 14 Oct 1837 when he purchased 36 acres on the drains of Little Hawksbill Creek (@5); on 24 Jul 1840 when they sold 7 acres on Hawksbill creek at the foot of the Blueridge Mountains (@6); on 08 Mar 1856 when they sold 212 acres on the east branch of Little Hawksbill Creek (@7); on 26 Mar 1862 when they sold 132 acres in Page Co. (@8); and on 31 May 1856 when they sold 4 acres on the east side of Little Hawksbill Creek to the children of William A. Mauck dec'd (@9). All of this land was located just east of current day Marksville, Page Co., VA.

In the Page Co. Road Book 02 Oct 1832 John Mock is appointed a commissioner for the construction of a road from Tanner's Ridge to Marksville.

John purchased 2 acres in Greene Co., VA 01 Jun 1862 (@10). This land was a Mill Lot on the Conway River, which is along the border of Greene Co. and Madison Co. and is an extension of the Rapidan River. I was unable to locate a deed for the sale of this property.

In a Greene Co., VA court order dated 10 Jun 1863 John obtained letters of administration for his sons Joseph D. Mauck and Thomas H. Mauck (@11).

John's death is recorded in the death records of Greene Co., VA. These records indicate John died at the age of 71 of old age and was a miller. It identifies his wife as L.J. Mauck and the death was reported by his son, G.L. Mauck. The record indicates his parents were not known and that he was born in Page Co., VA.

In Greene Co. Place Names by Roger Bristol there is a Mauck's Mill listed. The location is given as near 38 23 43 north at 78 26 14 west, located on the Conway River about .5 miles upstream from "Fletcher", later known as Jarrel's Mill, abandoned about 1920. It also states it was a Grist Mill that was active in the 1860's.

In June 1994 Joan Hackett, a published author on records of the Shenandoah area, spoke with John Gott, a retired librarian working with the Fauquier Co. Historical Society. Gott related that some of his Fletcher ancestors had settled in Greene Co., VA, and knew a Mr. Mauck who had come to Greene Co. from Page Co., to operate a mill. Mr. Mauck died in Greene Co. and was buried in the Fletcher Family Cemetery. The Fletchers did not know Mr. Mauck's first name, so his headstone just states "Mr. Mauck". Although Mr. Gott did not provide the dates for this event, this Mr. Mauck was most likely John Mauck.

Lydia's death is recorded in the death records of Urbana, OH, which provided her maiden name, date and place of death, age at death, and the cause of death as cancer. Lydia is buried in the Nettle Creek Cemetery, two miles south of Westville, Champaign Co., OH. Her headstone spells her last name as Mauch and states that she died in 1877 at the age of 75.

In an undated unsigned letter that states its source as the notes of J.W. Mauck for Mary Brubaker in 1930 (J.W. Mauck was likely Dr. Joseph William Mauck-see John's father David for further on Dr. Mauck), a Mrs. Benjamin Edwards (formerly Mauck) had an outline of her genealogy from her grandfather F.M. Mauck (Francis Marion Mauck, son of John). Her outline states that John was born in Prince William Co., VA 04 Nov 1797, and married Lydia 28 May 1820. It states Lydia was born 29 Jul 1801 and died 07 Jun 1877. It states John and Lydia lived in Rappahannock Co. and there had a farm and saw grist mill. They reportedly sold out during the Civil War and moved to Greene Co., where John died in in 1868.

The personal property tax lists of Prince William Co., VA indicate David Mock was there at the time John was born. A search of the deed records of Rappahannock Co. revealed no deeds for anyone named Mauck.

This information would appear to be second and third hand, although it quotes Mrs. Edwards and her grandfather as the source. The dates for John and Lydia's death are verified by other sources. Lydia's death date is one year off the one provided by her death record, but the month and date appear accurate. We know from the census that John and Lydia were actually in Page Co. thru 1860, so if they went to Rappahannock Co. it was likely between 1860 and 1868.

Some of the information from Mrs. Edwards is corroberated by a letter I received from Helen Farrell of Fort Myers, FL in 1995, in that Helen is is possession of a photocopy of three small notebook papers that were given to her by her grandmother Mary Floy Mauck (daughter of Charles A. Mauck and Eva Rose), and Helen believes her grandmother received them from Francis Marion Mauck. The notes on these papers provide dates on the births, marriages and deaths for John Mauck and Lydia Waite and their children, much of which is verified by official documentation. Unfortunately the three papers have nothing more than dates and info on John Mauck and Lydia, however they would indicate that Francis Marion Mauck did maintain info on his genealogy.

Mrs. Edward's information appears to be reliable, however, it should be taken with a grain of salt until more of it can be verified with documentation. If in fact the information was provided by Francis Marion Mauck, as it would appear, the information is probably pretty accurate as Francis was writing about his father and grandfather, both of which he would have first hand info on.

Mary Floy Mauck's papers state John was born 04 Nov 1797, died 22 Aug 1868 and married Lydia 28 May 1820. Lydia was born 29 Jul 1801 and died 07 Jun 1877. All of these dates match the info provided by Mrs. Edward's data. The birth date for Lydia still conflicts with the birth date provided by Lydia's death record, but only in that the death record indicates 1800 versus 1801. For the purposes of this document the death record date is used as it's an official source, although it may have, in fact, been 1800. If I could prove the papers were authored by Francis Mauck, I would deem him more reliable. Because I have no other source for John's birth date, and his marriage info to Lydia, Mrs. Webster and Mary Floy Mauck's dates are used. I believe them to be accurate. The marriage records of Prince William Co., VA were all lost for the records pre-1850, so verifying the marriage thru official records is nearly impossible.

John married Lydia J. Waite on 28 May 1820 in Prince William Co., VA. Lydia was born on 29 Jul 1800 in VA, died on 7 Jun 1877 in Urbana, Champaign Co., OH at age 76, and was buried in Nettle Creek Cemetery, Champaign Co., OH.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 8 M    i. William A. Mauck was born on 5 Jun 1821 in VA, died on 9 Sep 1861 at age 40, and was buried in Graves Chapel Cemetery, Page Co., VA.

+ 9 F    ii. Fannie Mauck was born about 1824 in VA.

+ 10 M    iii. Robert Franklin Mauck was born about 1825 in Shenandoah Co., VA and died in 1890-1896 about age 65.

+ 11 F    iv. Marguerite A. Mauck was born on 22 Sep 1829 in VA.

+ 12 M    v. Francis Marion Mauck was born on 10 Dec 1831 in Page Co., VA.

+ 13 M    vi. Joseph David Mauck was born on 21 Nov 1835 in VA and died on 17 Apr 1862 at age 26.

+ 14 M    vii. Thomas Huston Mauck was born on 11 Apr 1838 in VA and died on 10 Jun 1862 in Richmond, VA at age 24.

+ 15 M    viii. Edward Calvin Mauck was born on 15 May 1841 in Page Co., VA, died on 7 Nov 1903 at age 62, and was buried in Mt. Zion Methodist Church, Atlanta, GA.

+ 16 M    ix. George Douglass Mauck was born on 6 Aug 1847 in Page Co., VA and died on 30 Apr 1889 in Urbana, Champaign Co., OH at age 41.

3. William H. Mauck (David1) was born in Jun 1800 in VA, died on 28 Mar 1867 in White Cloud, Doniphan Co., KS at age 66, and was buried in Olive Branch Cemetery, Doniphan Co., KS.

William appears yearly in the personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co., VA from 1822 thru 1831, and then in Page Co., which was formed from Shenandoah Co. in December 1831, from 1832 thru 1850. William appears in the 1830 census of Shenandoah Co., VA and 1840 census of Page Co., VA.

Of interest is the documentation of the birth places for their sons James (b.1822), Gabriel (b. 1835), and Morgan (b. 1839 ), indicates they were all born in Luray, Page Co., VA.

William and Keziah appear in the 1850 census of Page Co., VA, which provided their birth data and William's occupation as a boatman.

It is very likely, William being employed as a boatman, that he worked on or operated Bixler's Ferry, which was and is located on the south fork of the Shenandoah River several miles northwest of Luray. William's sister Mary was married to John Bixler, who was also employed as a boatman, and probably worked with William. Another possibility for William is that he operated one of the boats that carried commerce on the Shenandoah River during this time.

William appears in the following Page Co., VA deeds: on 04 Mar 1853 when he received 31 acres from his son William H. Jr. and his wife Sarah (@1); on 13 May 1855 when he and his wife Keziah sold the same land (@2); on 13 Sep 1858 when he and Keziah sold 50 acres between Hawksbill Creek and the Shenandoah river (@3).

William and Keziah appear in the 1860 census of Doniphan Co., KS. William's death is reported in The Weekly Kansas Chief, which provided his death date, location, and age. It states he died of pulmonary affection (@4). In another article in the same newspaper on 19 May 1879, it states a monument was erected at the Olive Branch Cemetery in memory of William Mauck, ancestor of many of the Maucks in Doniphan Co., KS and a Mauck family in MO. It states William and his wife (not named) died at precisely the same age of 55 years 9 months, William d. 16 Mar 1868 in White Cloud, and Mrs. Mauck d. 26 Dec 1865 in Brook, IN. The death date and age for William conflicts with the date of birth provided by his age in the census and the obituary. William's death date on the obituary was likely more accurate, especially since the Doniphan Co. probate index indicates his will was administered 10 Apr 1867 (@5). The statement that their age was the same at death would also appear to be inaccurate, in that the census data indicates Keziah was born before William, and the newspaper article indicates she died after William. This would appear to have been a typo in the article as Keziah's age was 66 years 9 months when she died, indicating that if William was also 66 years 9 months old when he died, that he was born in June 1800.

William's will was dated 04 Feb 1867 (@6) and identifies his children as John O., James, Catharine M. MacInturff, Francis Wellington, Joseph Ferdinand, Gabriel C., Morgan S., and George W. Mauck. The Will was filed 10 Apr 1867.

Keziah is buried in the Brook Cemetery in Newton Co., IN. Her headstone also provided her death date and indicates she died at the age of 66 years 9 months. Keziah's maiden name of Waite was obtained from the death certificates of her sons Joseph and George. It is very likely she was a sister of Lydia Waite who married William's older brother John.

Keziah and Lydia's parents have not been located, however, in the probate records of Madison Co., VA there is a Will dated 16 Apr 1801 and proved 24 Sep 1801 (@7) for John Wait. This Will identifies his wife as Keziah and children as Edward (dec'd), George (dec'd), Benjamin, John, Obediah, Jesse, Ann Blake Wait, Sarah Levell Wait, Phebe Cowgill Wait, and Elizabeth Stonesiever Wait. Keziah being an unusual name, William's wife Keziah may have been a granddaughter of John and Keziah Wait.

William is buried in the Olive Branch Cemetery in Doniphan Co., KS. His headstone provided his birth and death years.

William married Keziah L. Waite before 1822. Keziah was born in Mar 1799 in VA, died on 26 Dec 1865 in Brook, Newton Co., IN at age 66, and was buried in Brook Cemetery, Newton Co., IN.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 17 M    i. James O. Mauck was born on 14 Oct 1822 in Luray, Page Co., VA, died on 3 Jan 1910 in Oregon, Holt Co., MO at age 87, and was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Oregon, Holt Co., MO.

+ 23 M    vii. Morgan Singleton Mauck was born on 11 Apr 1839 in Luray, Page Co., VA, died on 20 Dec 1928 in Iowa Twp., White Cloud, Doniphan Co., KS at age 89, and was buried in Olive Branch Cemetery, Doniphan Co., KS.

+ 24 M    viii. George Washington Mauck was born on 25 Aug 1842 in Page Co., VA and died on 3 Mar 1910 in Oklahoma City, OK at age 67.

4. Morgan Mauck (David1) was born on 10 Jun 1807 in Shenandoah Co., VA, died on 1 Sep 1853 in Page Co., VA at age 46, and was buried in Whitehouse, Page Co., VA.

Morgan's parents, David and Mary Ann, are identified in his death record in Page Co., VA. The death data also provided his age at death which provided a birthdate of 10 Jun 1807. His cause of death is listed as pneunalga. His death was reported by his son, John N. Mauck.

Morgan's marriage to Ann was obtained from the marriage records of Shenandoah Co., VA, which indicate Morgan as a son of David. Morgan's last name was spelled Mock.

The personal property tax lists of Shenandoah Co., VA show a Morgan Mauck in 1831, and the Page Co., VA personal property tax lists show a Morgan Mauck yearly from 1832 thru 1850. During this period there were two Morgan Maucks in the area. The other Morgan was the son of Robert Mauck and Christina Ruffner and according to the family Bible records was born 20 Oct 1806 as Morgan Ruffner Mauck, 8 months before this Morgan son of David and Mary. Examining the personal property tax lists in Page Co., the Morgan there in 1832, 1837, 1838, 1839, 1841, 1842, 1843, 1847, and 1850 is listed adjacent Abraham Mauck or his brothers Joel and John. These were the cousins of Morgan Ruffner Mauck. The Morgan in Page Co. in 1833, 1834, and 1836 is listed adjacent John Mauck son of David and Mary. The 1840 census of Page Co. also lists a Morgan Mauck, adjacent the families of Joel and his siblings.

Morgan and Ann appear in the 1850 census of Page Co., VA. Of interest is this Morgan is the one and only Morgan that appears in the 1850 census, and the personal property tax lists the same year show only one Morgan Mauck, adjacent John Mauck son of Abraham Mauck, Abraham being Morgan Ruffner Mauck's uncle.

Ann appears in the 1860 census of Page Co., VA with her son John, as Rebecca. The census provided her birth info.

Morgan is buried in a small cemetery at Whitehouse, Page Co., VA. His headstone also provided his death date and age at death, which would provide a death date of 11 Jun 1807, conflicting by one day with the death record info.

Ann is buried in the Dayton Cemetery in Dayton, Rockingham Co., VA. Her headstone provided her dates of birth and death.

It is very clear from deeds involving David Mock and Mary Butler's other children that some of them lived near Abraham Mauck Jr., son of Abraham Mauck son of Daniel Mauck and Barbara Harnsberger. The above Morgan Ruffner Mauck was Daniel Mauck's grandson thru his second marriage, to Rebecca Baker. Perhaps this is the reason Morgan Mauck appears adjacent both Mauck lines in the personal property tax lists, they were all visited the same day as they lived adjacent each other. However, it is interesting to note that although there are supposed to be two Morgan Maucks in Page Co. at the same time, only one appears in any of the records. This author believes that there is a remote possibility there was but one Morgan Mauck, and he was born to the one Mauck family (Robert and Christina) and raised by the other (David and Mary). See Morgan Ruffner Mauck's line for further on his records.

Morgan married Ann Rebecca Phillips on 28 Nov 1829 in Shenandoah Co., VA. Ann was born on 22 Dec 1809 in VA, died on 13 Dec 1878 at age 68, and was buried in Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Rockingham Co., VA.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 25 M    i. John N. Mauck was born in Jan 1830 in VA.

+ 26 F    ii. Mary E. Mauck was born on 9 Mar 1833 in VA, died on 9 Dec 1917 at age 84, and was buried in Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Rockingham Co., VA.

+ 27 M    iii. Joseph W. Mauck was born on 18 Feb 1835 in Page Co., VA, died on 2 May 1912 in Rockingham Co., VA at age 77, and was buried in Cook's Creek Presbyterian Cemetery, Rockingham Co., VA.

5. Ann Mauck (David1) was born in 1812-1820 in VA.

Ann appears in the 1850 census of Page Co., VA, age 38, living in the home of John Bixler and his wife Polly (Mary) Mauck. Ann appears in the 1860 census of Page Co., age 40, in the home of William Judd and his wife Ann Bixler. Also in the home is Ann's younger brother David Bixler. David and Ann were the children of Mary Bixler. Ann is again listed with William Judd in the 1870 census of Page Co., age 59 years.

There is no direct proof that Ann is a daughter of David and Mary, however those are Mary's parents and Ann is too old to be descended from, or having been married to, David and Mary's other children. The census provided her birth data.

6. Mary B. Mauck (David1) was born on 17 Oct 1815 in VA, died on 30 May 1853 at age 37, and was buried in Grove Cemetery, Page Co., VA.

Mary is buried near her parents, David and Mary, in the Grove Cemetery near Luray, Page Co., VA. Her headstone provided her birth and death dates, and states she was the wife of John Bixler.

John appears to have owned the land on which Mary is buried. In a Page Co. deed dated 22 Jun 1832 (@1) John Bixler purchased 24 acres on the west bank of the South branch of the Shenandoah. In another Page Co. deed dated 9 Jun 1832 (@2) John purchased 63 1/2 acres on the northwest bank of the South river of the Shenandoah. Both these lands were formerly the property of David Grove. This second parcel was purchased from George D. Glenn and his wife Nancy Grove, daughter of David Grove and his wife Anna. Of interest is George D. Glenn posted the bond for the marriage of Henry Mauck to Mary Ann Glenn.

Mary's marriage to John appears in the marriage records of Page Co., VA. The bondsman was Henry Mauck. Henry Mauck was the son of David Mauck and Sally Stroup, and is documented further in the family file of David Mauck's parents, Daniel Mauck and Rebecca Baker. It is of interest that he was the bondsman for Mary's marriage, as his parents are thoroughly documented.

Henry Mauck had a sister named Mary, identified in a Page Co. deed and the family bible for Daniel Koontz, who married Elizabeth Mauck, another daughter of David Mauck and Sally Stroup. Due to the fact Henry Mauck was the bondsman for this marriage, one might be inclined to think that this Mary, who married John Bixler, was the daughter of David Mauck and Sally Stroup as there is no absolute proof that she was the daughter of David Mock and Mary Butler. However, Mary, sister of Henry, married and moved to Ohio.

Mary and John appear in the 1850 census of Page Co., VA. The census provided John's birth info and occupation as a boatman. Also in their home in 1850 is Ann Mauck age 38 years.

It is very likely, John being employed as a boatman, that he worked on or operated Bixler's Ferry, which was and is located on the south fork of the Shenandoah River several miles northwest of Luray. Mary's brother William was also employed as a boatman, and probably worked with John.

John is identified as a son of Michael Bixler in Michael's Shenandoah Co., VA will dated 1826 and proved 08 Oct 1827 (@3). The will also identifies John's mother as Anna. Of interest is the will also identifies John's sister Lufsa as the wife of Daniel Aleshire. Daniel Aleshire's sister Margaret married Henry Mauck, and their brother Henry P. Aleshire married Rebecca Mauck. Henry and Rebecca were children of David Mauck and Sarah Stroup. The families of David Mauck and Sarah Stroup and David Mauck and Mary Butler are not known to be related.

Michael Bixler's marriage to Anna Heiston 10 Mar 1795 appears in the marriage records of Shenandoah Co., VA. The bondsman was Christian Bixler. Their ages were estimated assuming they were over 17 when married.

John's mother Anna is identified as the daughter of Peter Heastand Sr. in Peter's Shenandoah Co., VA will dated 30 Dec 1811 and proved 9 Mar 1812 (@4). The Will identifies Peter's wife as Barbara and his father as Henry Heastand. The Dunmore Co., VA will of Henry Heastand was dated 22 Mar 1777 and proved 28 Aug 1783 (@5). The will spells Henry's last name as Heestant. Peter was a witness to the will. Dunmore Co. became Shenandoah Co. in 1776. Dr. David B.Trimble, in his book "Heistand Family of Page Co., VA, states Peter was born about 1738 in PA, and Peter's father Henry was born about 1709, probably near Zurich, Switzerland. Dr. Trimble relates that henry was married about 1732, and first appears in what would later become Page Co., 22 Sep 1743 when he purchased 205 acres on the banks of the Shenandoah from Philip Long.

John Bixler is buried in the Lindale Mennonite Church Cemetery in Edom, Rockingham Co., VA. His headstone provided his dates of birth and death.

+ 33 M    vi. David Henry Bixler was born about 1849 in VA.

7. Joseph Mauck (David1) was born about 1816 in VA and died before 1880.

Joseph's marriage to Mary appears in the marriage records of Page Co., VA. The bondsman was Jacob Stover.

Joseph appears yearly in the personal property tax lists of Page Co., VA from 1841 thru 1850. Joseph appears with Mary in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 census of Page Co., VA. The census provided their birth data.

Mary appears in the 1880 census with several of her daughters and grandchildren. The census indicates she was a crippled widow and that her parents were both born in VA.

Mary is buried in the Green Hill Cemetery in Luray, Page Co., VA. Her headstone provided her birth and death dates. Her obituary indicates he died at home at her residence at Sandy Hook, Page Co., VA.

There is no direct proof that Joseph is descended from David Mock and Mary Butler. Joseph was a cooper, which was David's occupation. In the 1850 census Joseph is listed adjacent Peter Grove and several homes from John Bixler and Polly Mauck. Polly was the daughter of David and Mary. Peter Grove was a son of Marcus Grove, who is buried in the same cemetery as David Mock and Mary Butler.

Also of interest is Jacob Stover, who was the bondsman for Joseph and Mary's marriage, was the father of Sarah M. Stover, who in 1851 married William H. Mauck Jr., son of William H. Mauck Sr., son of David Mock and Mary Butler.

Joseph married Mary Ann Moyers on 15 Dec 1840 in Page Co., VA. Mary was born on 12 Aug 1814 in VA, died on 26 Nov 1882 in Sandy Hook, Page Co., VA at age 68, and was buried in Green Hill Cemetery, Luray, Page Co., VA.

8. William A. Mauck (John2, David1) was born on 5 Jun 1821 in VA, died on 9 Sep 1861 at age 40, and was buried in Graves Chapel Cemetery, Page Co., VA.

William's marriage to Mary appears in the marriage records of Page Co., VA. William A. Mauck and James Crigler, Mary's father, posted the marriage bond. James Crigler's marriage to Sarah (Sally) Triplett 28 Aug 1810 appears in the marriage records of Culpepper Co., VA.

William appears yearly in the personal property tax lists of Page Co., VA from 1844 thru 1850.

William purchased 4 acres on Little Hawksbill Creek 01 Jan 1847 (@1). Of interest is this deed indicates the land was adjacent John Mauck and Abraham Mauck. John Mauck was probably John, father of William, but Abraham Mauck was the son of Abraham Mauck Sr., son of Daniel Mauck and Barbara Harnsberger. There is no known relation between the families of David Mock and Mary Butler, and Daniel Mauck and Barbara Harnsberger.

In a Page Co., VA deed dated 11 Aug 1849 (@2) William and Mary purchased 4 acres on Little Hawksbill Creek from Daniel Kibler and Mary his wife " formerly Varner", then the same day sold land on Hawksbill Creek to John Mauck.

During the Civil War William served with Co. M 97th VA Militia as a sergeant. He enlisted 22 Jul 1861 in Luray (@4).

In a Page Co., VA deed dated 31 May 1866 (@5) William's 4 acres on the east side of Little Hawksbill Creek was divided among his children. The children and William's parents, John and Lydia, are named in this deed.

Both Robert and Susan are indicated as widowed, although his 1st wife, Sarah, appears in the 1900 census with their son Fayette. The marriage also provided their age at marriage, their birthplace, parents, and his occupation still as a farmer. Robert's birth place is indicated as Page Co., however since Page wasn't formed from Shenandoah until 1832, Shenandoah was used for this record.

The Madison Co., VA marriage records indicate Susan Mauck-Rush as a widow again 14 Dec 1896, when she married James Riddle. It is assumed that Robert died between the date he married Susan and the date she married again.

Robert's birth date and full middle name were obtained from the personal records of Mary Floy Mauck, grand-daughter of Robert's brother Francis, who reportedly obtained this info from Francis himself. For further info see the notes under Robert's father John.

In a Page Co., VA probate dated 3 Apr 1850 Sarah Jasper, wife of John Jasper, is identified as the daughter of Augustin and Frances Bradley (@1). The probate was signed by John Mauck. the 13 Nov 1788 marriage of Augustine Bradley to Frankey Hurt appears in the marriage records of Culpepper Co., VA.

Marguerite appears in the 1870 census of Page Co., VA in the home of George Bailey and his family. George was married to Exea Jasper, sister of Marguerite's dec'd husband.

Marguerite's birth date and full middle name were obtained from the personal records of Mary Floy Mauck, grand-daughter of Marguerite's brother Francis, who reportedly obtained this info from Francis himself. For further info see the notes under Marguerite's father John. The records of another grand-daughter of Francis, Mrs. Benjamin Edwards, indicate Marguerite moved to Champaign Co., OH with her mother Lydia, in 1871, and that Margerite died in Atlanta, GA at about 77 years old.

Marguerite's father John Mauck was appointed administrator of the estate of William Jasper 27 Nov 1854 (@1). From this it is assumed that William probably died that year.

@1) Page Co., VA Will Book #F p.126
