First Generation  Next

1. George Mauck was born about 1779 in VA and died after 1860.

The first record of George appears in the Rockingham Co., VA marriage records when he married Mary (Polly), daughter of James and Christina Turner, in 1814. George appears in the personal property taxes of Rockingham Co., VA in 1815, and continues to appear in the tax lists through 1850.

George appears in the 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 census of Rockingham Co., VA. The 1860 census indicates his birth info as 71 years b. VA.

In July 1821 George received 22 acres in the area of Brock's Gap, Rockingham Co., VA from James Turner and his wife Christina (@1). James Turner originally purchased this land 12 Sep 1816 from Andrew Stoneburner (@2). George and Mary sold this land 01 Apr 1833 (@3). George sold more land in Brock's Gap 10 Aug 1837 (@4). This deed indicates he received this land from James Turner 25 Aug 1820. The deed when he received this land has not been found. These deeds were restored from burnt deeds that had been damaged when the Rockingham Co. courthouse records were burned during the Civil War.

According to the book, Church and Cemeteries of West Rockingham Co., VA by the DAR, several of James Turner's children are buried at the Turner Family Cemetery located on route 612 at Reedy Run, near the Hebron Mennonite Church.

In the book, The Descendants of James Turner (1810-1860) and Margaret Fulk by Goldie Turner May, the author states that James was the son of James who was born about 1732, who was an early settler in Brock's Gap, Rockingham Co., VA. The author's source for this information is not indicated in her book. She also states that James Jr. was born in Brock's Gap in 1765, married Christina Frunkfodder about 1787, and was buried in the above family cemetery in 1849. The book then lists James's children as Polly who married George Mauck, Jacob who married Betsey Cherryholmes, Andrew who married Susan Crummet, John who married Christina Ritchie, Joseph who married Susanna Bible, James who married Margaret Fulk, and Christina who married Michael Ritchie. The book details only the descendants of James Turner who married Margaret Fulk. The author did not list several of James's other daughters.

In the book "Abstracts of Executor, Administrator & Guardian Bonds of Rockingham Co., VA 1778-1864" by Margaret Pride, on 20 Dec 1814 John Heater was appointed administrator for John Mauk, dec'd. Jacob Barrick was the bondsman. On 05 May 1823 John Heater is indicated as deceased with Philip Heater being appointed his executor and the bondsman being John Ritchey and Michael Huffman. This John Mauk is possibly the father of George. John appeared in the 1814 personal property tax list of Rockingham Co., VA. This was the first and only year John appears in the personal property taxes of Rockingham Co., which were taken yearly from 1782-1850. A John Mauck also appears in a road survey in the area of Brock's Gap in 1813, however this source states the spelling was not clear and it could have been a John Minnick (there was a John Minnick in Rockingham Co at the time). This road was surveyed again in 1820, with many of the same people listed again, but with John missing and George Mauck listed instead (@5).

John and Christina Heter appear as communicants 25 Oct 1812 at the Rader Lutheran Church in Timberville, Rockingham Co., VA.

In 1811 John Heater is listed as the administrator of Jacob Souder (@5). One of the appraisers is listed as Jacob Trumbo, who was also listed adjacent John Mauck and George Mauck in the above road surveys. This document states that Jacob Souder owned land in both Rockingham and Loudoun counties, and appointed administrators for both counties.

Jacob Souder's "heirs" are listed in 1840 (@5) and identified as Philip Souder, Daniel Fulk and his wife Sarah (m. 20 Feb 1817 Rockingham Co., VA), John Souder, Jacob Souder Jr., Philip Stoneburner and his wife Christina, George Grove and his wife Catherine, and "George Mauck and his wife". The document does not identify George's wife, probably meaning that George himself was the heir and not his wife.

A George Mack is identified as a grandson of Christina Heter, wife of John Heter dec'd of Rockingham Co., VA, in Christina Heter's will dated 25 Nov 1833 and proved 08 Jun 1835 in Shenandoah Co., VA (@6). Christina identifies her other grandchildren as John & Philip Souder, Christina Stoneburner, Sarah Folk, and Catharine Grove. Her will states her husband is deceased.

It would appear, based on these documents, that John and Christina Heter were George Mauck's grandparents, and that his father, possibly John Mauck, was married to a daughter of John and Christina, assuming Christina had no marriage prior to John Heter. It's not known why George would have been listed as an heir of Jacob Souder. One logical possibility is that George was the nephew of Jacob and Ann Souder.

In the records of New Jerusalem Lutheran Church of Loudoun Co., VA (@7), Johannes Mack and wife Margaretha had a son, Johannes, born 3 Jan 1782. The sponsors were Johannes Huter and wife Christina. Johannes also appears as a sponsor in the baptism of Johannes, son of Philip and Elizabeth Hueter 25 Mar 1799. The name Huter/Hueter in these records is also referred to as Gueter, and Philip and Elizabeth are also referred to by the surname Heater.

As indicated above, Philip Heater was appointed administrator of the estate of John Heater, dec'd, in Rockingham Co. Given the totality of all of this information, it would appear that George Mack/Mauck came to Rockingham Co. from Loudoun Co., though more research needs to be done to confirm this.

Of interest is George was not the first Mauck in the area of Brock's Gap. Rudolph Mauck Jr. resided in this area before moving to Kentucky about 1787.

Mary's birth and death dates are indicated on her headstone.

It's not known which John is which, and who this second John belongs too. Because the one John is with James and Maria in 1870 it is assumed he was their son John, but it could be that John with Lydia was their son, as his age matched that in the 1860 census.
